Elijah – a very human prophet!

Service today was really different and interesting in a way that seems so hard to explain. The prayer time before the service started left me with a central thought,”Has anything crept in between my intimacy with the Lord?” It was a question posed to all of us and particularly addressed to couples who may have allowed their significant other take precedence over God. The question resonated within my soul as wondered if trophies of the past had crowded my life. Or even just the busyness of life. Has the busyness of ministry taken precendence of intimacy with Jesus. Ouch! A question that demands an honest answer. Further into the worship and the word, the next interesting thought was to realise that this past week’s restful time was probably God’s gentle way of teaching me to rest before the next leg of the race. The month of January was a restful time after the aftermath of 2008 which left me pretty shattered emotionally and physically. I am still building up my strength and stamina for the next leg of the 2009 journey. After the rest, Elijah met God in stillness and quietness. Not in the earthquakes or wind or fire!

These two thoughts will carry me thru 2009. For the upcoming year, I need to watch out that nothing (nobody) comes between my time with the Lord and to know when to be still before the Lord. In doing these, I believe like Elijah, God will raise up Kings (people in position) to help along as well as successors (Elisha) in the different areas. All I need to do is to grow in my intimacy and learning to be still so that I will know what to do when it is time to run (40 days!).

If you are unclear and want to know what I am talking about, read 1 Kings 19. Be challenged, Be inspired. Elijah was a remarkable prophet but thankfully we got to see his weaknesses and with this kind of revelation, we get to learn how to depend on God! Wow!

The work of Ministry

If I collected Rm1 everytime someone asks me,”So what do u do exactly in the church office?”  I could well have paid for my mortgage by now! This question is usually not asked out of any disrespect to the minister or the ministry but birthed out of genuine interest (intrigue?). Somehow whenever I answer the question, to my own ears, the reasons sound a tad weak or not weighty enough. Hmmm…  I guess it is hard to convince people of the many different hats that pastors/ministers wear! Some of the hats include: event planning, public relations, publications and promotions, website maintenance to name a few. All this plus the actual job of pastoring ie shepherding and teaching and preaching which also includes developing materials! Hmm…. does this sound convincing? But in reality that is what we do. Thankfully it does not all happen on a single day but a combination of 4 in one week is enough to send me into a stressful state. Of course there is much joy because it is usually so much fun because of the people we get to work with, (well at times it does get stressful…LOL!). And those times of just hanging with the youth at lunch and mamak. Fun times that bring about a different level of mentoring. Ministry is fun! Ministry has if challenges but there is always hope despite the tragedies and challenges!

I may not have all the words to say about what I do, all i know is that entering full time ministry despite the challenges and uncertainties, has been the BEST decision of my life! There is nothing else I would rather be doing. I used to say in frustration, “why did choose me God?” But now I ask the same question, simply awestruck that God would actually call me and choose me! How cool is that? LOL!
